About Tom Clemo - Desert Photographer

Tom was born and raised in Long Beach, California. He learned to love the outdoors – especially the desert – and at an early age, had spent a significant amount of time in the Colorado Plateau. When Tom was ten, he and his father rafted the Colorado River. This experience allowed Tom an appreciation of both the complexity and the beauty of the region and several trips back to the area provided more and more encouragement to explore. He has since rafted the Colorado and several other rivers that fill Lake Powell.

In 1999, Tom discovered the deserts, canyons and rivers of Southern Utah. Since then, he has hiked many of the sinuous slot canyons, explored hidden alcoves and recently kayaked the Escalante River from source to Lake Powell. He has spent many days below the canyon walls, swimming through cold pools, bushwhacking through riparian corridors, rappelling from pour offs and searching for that perfect shot when the light is just right. He visits the region two to three weeks a year.

Desert photography came secondary to the visits. He was looking for a way to share the beauty of the canyons while emphasizing their size and unrivaled remoteness. Desert photos brought back from his first visit yielded encouragement from his friends to share the beauty of this remote and unique place.

Tom's work has been featured in galleries and public buildings in Portland, Ashland and Medford, Oregon. This website is yet another opportunity for Tom to share the canyons, deserts and the beautiful scenery that they provide with those who may have trouble making the long and arduous trip.

At present, Tom is a 24-year veteran of the American Fire Service. A Firefighter's schedule has allowed for continued discovery in the region and he looks forward to many more trips in the desert. Please enjoy your exploration of this website and send your comments. Thanks for your visit!
